The Unity Bar represents a coalition of diverse bar associations, committed to fostering a judiciary that reflects the communities it serves. Originally founded in 1987 in Sacramento by Jerry Chong, Judicial Appointment Secretary Luis Cespedes, and retired Judge Renard Shepard, the Unity Bar’s mission has remained steadfast: to unify ethnic and minority bar associations in their pursuit of a more equitable and inclusive judicial system.

Today, the Unity Bar chapters across California counties actively support the appointment of diverse judicial candidates by advocating for nominees to the Superior Courts and District Courts of Appeal and defending judges facing unfair criticism. Recent joint efforts from Unity Bars include letters to the Commission on Judicial Appointments in support of appointments like Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero, Associate Justice Kelli Evans, and Associate Justice Martin Jenkins—affirming their dedication to a judiciary that embodies diversity, equity, and integrity.

Unity Bars support Governor Gavin Newsom’s vision for judicial diversity, inspired by Secretary Jenkins, who emphasized the importance of representation in the judiciary. Through outreach and education, Unity Bars encourage their members to apply for judicial positions and provide crucial advocacy, endorsement, and public support for candidates who reflect the values of inclusivity and fairness.
